Royal Route of Prague

The Royal Route of Prague is a tourist’s must – the most beautiful sightseeing route through the city and the symbol of historical Prague.

The Royal Route in Prague covers the journey ridden by the kings of Bohemia to their coronation in the St. Vitus’ Cathedral within Prague Castle.

The coronation processions started in the present-day Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) where the city residence of the sovereign, called Králův dvůr (King’s Courtyard), once stood. They continued along Celetná Street to Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square) and Malé náměstí, along Karlova Street to Křížovnické náměstí, across Karlův most (Charles Bridge), along Mostecká Street to Malostranské náměstí (Lesser Town Square) and uphill along Nerudova Street and Úvoz to Pohořelec. Here, not far from the Strahovský Monastery, the route turned sharply right; the direct access from Nerudova Street to Prague Castle was cut through the rock only in the 17th century. From Pohořelec the processions continued across Loretánské náměstí (Loreta Square), along Loretánská Street and Hradčanské náměstí to the Cathedral in which the coronation ceremony took place.

Since the first coronation of the king of Bohemia in 1086 till the last one in 1836, twenty-six kings and twenty-eight queens of Bohemia in total were crowned during a ceremonial mass in the St. Vitus’ Cathedral.

Today, the Royal Route is the most common of all routes along which visitors to Prague stride; however, usually in the opposite direction, from Pohořelec to the Castle, across the Charles Bridge towards Náměstí Republiky.

You can set out to the Royal Route from our hotels, too, although they are not situated directly along the Route but close to it. Ideal hotels for visiting the Royal Route are Kampa and William located in Újezd below the Petřín hill in close proximity to Malostranské náměstí, Melantrich in the vicinity of the Old Town Square, or Harmony situated near Náměstí Republiky.

The Royal Route is best to be walked there and back. It is relatively long, lined with numerous cultural as well as historical monuments. There is a good reason the Royal Route is considered the most beautiful of all Prague sightseeing routes.
